A Closer Look at the Solution Engineer Role at Scoro: A Chat with David Brown

Solution Engineers at Scoro play an important part in the sales process, combining technical and product knowledge with a deep understanding of customer needs. To give a closer look at what the role is really like, we spoke with David Brown, a Solution Engineer on our US team. In this post, he shares what his day-to-day looks like, how he found his way into the role, and what makes it both challenging and rewarding.

1. Can you introduce yourself and tell us about your role at Scoro?

Hi, my name is David. I’m a Solution Engineer on Scoro’s US team, based in New Jersey. I’ve been with Scoro since the summer of 2025, leading technical evaluations for our SMB clients throughout Europe and the Americas. I’m originally from Brazil, and also fluent in Portuguese, which comes in handy now and then on calls.

Outside of work, most of my time goes to my dog, Jackson Brown, a two-year-old Shar-Pei mix with way too much energy. When I’m not at the dog park or out on a hike with Jackson, you can find me out with friends, checking out a new restaurant or relaxing on the beach.

2. What does your day-to-day look like as a Solution Engineer?

It varies quite a bit, which is one of the things I love about it. 

A big part of my day is preparing for and running personalized product demonstrations for prospects. Before any demo, I’ll go back and rewatch the discovery call to really understand the prospect’s world – their workflows, their pain points, how their team operates. From there, I build out a demo environment that tells their story: what it would look like if they were actually using Scoro tomorrow.

One of the perks of being fully remote is the flexibility it gives me when I prep demos. I’ll often use my evenings to get ready for the next day’s calls, which frees me up to stay sharp and focused when it matters most.

3. How did you end up working as a Solution Engineer?

I spent over a decade in quota-driven sales as an Account Executive before finding this role. 

Looking back, I can see the pattern pretty clearly. In every sales job I had, I’d naturally gravitate toward the technical side of the product. I’d become the rep on the team who understood the tool best, and I’d end up being pulled into deals where that deeper knowledge was needed.

Eventually, I realized there was a dedicated role for exactly that: someone who leads the technical evaluation, owns the product demonstration, and bridges the gap between what a prospect needs and what the product can do. When I found out that it was an actual job, I jumped at it. This is my second Solution Engineer role, and at this point, I can honestly say it’s the job I was always working toward without knowing it.

4. What do you enjoy most about being a Solution Engineer at Scoro?

First, problem-solving. Every prospect is different, which means every demo is a new puzzle to figure out. I genuinely enjoy digging into how a business works and finding the best way to show them how Scoro fits.

I also love the creative side of demo prep. I’ll always find a way to add a small nod or reference to something relevant. Video game fans will recognize the term “easter eggs”, based on something that came up in the discovery call. It’s a small thing, but it signals to the prospect that I actually listened, and it makes the demo feel personal rather than scripted.

And honestly, the flexibility of the role is a big plus as well. Scoro trusts you to get the work done, and the freedom that comes with that makes a big difference.

5. What skills or qualities help someone succeed in this role?

This is still a sales role, and you need the people skills that come with that. You have to genuinely like working with people and enjoy helping them solve complex problems.

Beyond that, you need to be technically curious. You don’t have to be an engineer, but you do need to be comfortable digging into how software works, asking the right questions, and thinking through technical challenges. 

And because prospects move fast and no two deals are alike, you also need to thrive in a fast-paced environment where things change.

6. How would you describe the company culture at Scoro?

Energetic and genuinely international. The team is young, sharp, and motivated, and because Scoro has employees from all over the world, there’s a real sense of multiculturalism that I find refreshing. A lot of team members take advantage of the remote setup to work from different countries for stretches at a time.

The twice-yearly gatherings in Estonia are a huge part of what makes the culture feel real, especially for remote employees. I truly enjoy spending a full week with people from across the company, doing activities together after hours. It creates connections that carry over into day-to-day in a way that’s hard to replicate over Zoom.

7. What’s been one memorable moment during your time at Scoro?

Both trips to Estonia have been highlights, honestly. The first one had a camping trip and a swim in the Baltic Sea – not something I expected to be doing for work. The second one was a completely different vibe: go-karting, wine bars, and a black-tie party. Two very different experiences, both genuinely memorable.

It’s rare to work somewhere that puts that kind of effort into bringing people together, and I think it really says something about the culture.

8. What advice would you give someone who wants to become a Solution Engineer?

If you enjoy technical problem-solving and the idea of leading product demonstrations in a pre-sales environment, this role is worth pursuing. It combines the relationship-building side of sales with the depth of a more technical role. And for the right person, that combination is hard to beat.

Don’t be put off if your background is not a perfect match. What matters is that you’re technically curious, you enjoy getting into the details of how tools work, and you genuinely want to help people make informed decisions.
